July 22 Zodiac Sign: Cancer or Leo?

July 22 is a cusp birthday: in 55 of the 87 years from 1940 to 2026 the Sun entered Leo during July 22 (US Eastern Time), so people born that day are Cancer before the change time and Leo after it; in 32 years the change came later and the whole day was Cancer. Your sign depends on the year and time of birth — see the table. Pacific Time: change during the day in 66 years, whole day Leo in 0, whole day Cancer in 21.

Two clocks run down the table, New York's and Los Angeles's, and the one for the birth city is the one to read. Where a birth year shows a time, that is the minute Leo took over; the clock time on the birth record lands on Cancer's side of it or on Leo's. In 2026 the Pacific change time is 12:13 PDT, which puts a Los Angeles birth at 18:00 that day on the Leo side. With no time beside a year, July 22 never changed sign that day. The two clocks are not always three hours apart: in 1940 New York kept daylight time and Los Angeles did not, so the same crossing is listed as 20:34 EDT and 16:34 PST, and UTC had already reached July 23. The table leaves out Central and Mountain clocks, which the next section covers. The whole month, date by date, is on the July zodiac signs page.

Among the birth years, Leo reached New York clocks on July 22 as early as 03:44 EDT (2024) and as late as 23:52 EDT (1953), eight minutes before the date ran out. Pacific clocks add change years of their own. In 1941, 1945, 1949, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011 the Eastern date stayed Cancer to midnight, yet Leo reached Los Angeles that night, between 20:57 PST (1949) and 23:44 PDT (1999). The 1944 times and the 1945 Pacific time are marked as War Time, the extra clock hour the country kept from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945. The computed 2028 row is the odd one out: the crossing reaches New York at 02:54 EDT on July 22, when Los Angeles still reads 23:54 PDT on July 21, so that Pacific July 22 is Leo from its first minute.

The birth chart needs three entries, the date, the clock time and the place of birth, to check your Sun sign with your birth time, and it is free, with nothing to sign up for; births on Central or Mountain clocks are checked there too. A missing hour means the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such; a July 22 birth is the kind where the recorded time is worth tracking down before you start.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, and how it classes Cancer and Leo below is no evidence about anyone born on July 22.

Born ahead of the switch, a July 22 baby is a Cancer, and Cancer's element, Water, reads cold, wet and soft in the old element list. Count the signs from Aries and Cancer lands fourth; even places carry negative polarity, otherwise called receptive or yin. Its ruler, the Moon, goes with moods in astrology and, for some astrologers, with the urge to nurture. The whole reading is on the Cancer zodiac sign page.

Anyone born at the switch or later that day is a Leo, a Fire sign, and Fire in that list is hot, dry and ardent. Leo stands fifth, an odd place, so its polarity is positive: active, yang and expressive in astrology's other terms. Its ruler is the Sun. The sign itself is covered on the Leo zodiac sign page.

FAQ

Does a cusp birthday on July 22 make someone half Cancer, half Leo? No. Calling July 22 a cusp only says that the Sun's Cancer-to-Leo change often lands on that date. The move is instantaneous, so a baby is born with the Sun still in Cancer or already in Leo, never partway; the birth year and the local clock time say which.

Can a July 22 baby born in the morning be a Leo? Yes, but not in the early birth years. From 1940 to 2026, every change before noon fell in 1984 or later on Eastern clocks and in 1972 or later on Pacific ones; the earliest was 03:44 EDT, or 00:44 PDT, in 2024. In other years Leo arrived after midday, as late as 23:52 EDT (1953) or 23:44 PDT (1999), or not until July 23. Whoever arrives before that year's change minute is Cancer; at it or after it, Leo.

How this page was made

The year table is built from NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data for the Sun's entry into Leo, 1940–2030, with each moment converted to Eastern and Pacific clock time under IANA time zone rules. Elements, polarity, rulers and the Moon's themes rest on Wikipedia's "Astrological sign," "Astrology and the classical elements" and "Planets in astrology," and the line on scientific status on "Astrology and science." Prepared by Astrolivo's editorial team and checked line by line against those sources, the page reports sign meanings only as the tradition gives them.
