Birth Chart Calculator

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. The calculation is free, needs no sign-up, and the result appears right away.

Placidus houses · tropical zodiac · 5 major aspects, 6° orb · JPL DE440s, checked against Swiss Ephemeris

After you submit, you get your chart wheel, your big three (Sun, Moon and rising sign) and a short reading.

What your birth chart shows

A birth chart shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were along the zodiac when you were born, and how they relate to each other. In astrology, this is read as a symbolic portrait of a person, not as a forecast of events.

The wheel combines four things:

  • Planets. The Sun, the Moon and the planets, each standing for a different area of temperament and experience. The Sun is usually read as core identity, the Moon as emotional life.
  • Signs. The zodiac sign each planet was in, which colors how that planet is described.
  • Houses. Twelve sections of the chart that place each planet in an area of life, such as home, work or relationships.
  • Rising sign. Also called the ascendant: the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets where the houses begin.

Charts here use the tropical zodiac, the one most Western astrology is based on. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see How to read your chart.

Why birth time and place matter

The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, and the slower planets for months or years. The rising sign does not. It changes roughly every two hours as the Earth turns, so two people born on the same day can have different rising signs. The houses are tied to the rising sign, so they shift with it.

Place matters for the same reason. The horizon you were born under depends on where you were, and so does the local clock time. That is why the calculator asks for a city, not only a date.

If you don't know your birth time, tick "I don't know my birth time". You still get a chart marked as unknown-time: it uses a noon reference and hides the rising sign (Ascendant), Midheaven (MC), houses, exact degrees, and aspects. Because the calculator checks for sign changes across your entire local birth date, any planet—including the Sun or the Moon—that changes sign on that day is shown with each possible sign rather than a single noon guess.

A birth certificate, hospital record or a family member's memory are the usual sources for a birth time.

Your big three

Your big three are your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. Astrologers often start here because together they give a quick outline of a chart: the Sun for core identity, the Moon for emotional life, the rising sign for how a person comes across.

If you only want those three, the Big three calculator shows them without the full chart. To check a single placement, use the Rising sign calculator or the Moon sign calculator.

FAQ

How can I find my full birth chart?

Use the form above. The calculator returns a chart wheel with your planets, signs and houses, plus your big three and a short reading. The more exact your birth time, the more reliable the houses and rising sign.

What is a birth chart?

It is a diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the zodiac at the moment and place of your birth. Astrologers read it as an interpretation of character and tendencies. It is a tradition of reading symbols, not a scientific measurement of personality.

What are my big three signs?

Your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. The Sun sign depends on your birth date, the Moon sign on your date and, in some cases, your time, and the rising sign on your time and place. The form above gives you all three.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Tick "I don't know my birth time". The chart is calculated for noon and marked as such, without houses or a rising sign. You can calculate again later if you find the time.
