Mercury Sign in Astrology

Your Mercury sign is the zodiac sign Mercury occupied at your birth. In astrology, Mercury stands for communication, thinking and reasoning, along with adaptability and the everyday exchange of information. As seen from Earth, Mercury always stays within about 28° of the Sun, which keeps it in your Sun sign or one of the two signs beside it.

Mercury at a glance

  • Rules (domicile): Gemini and Virgo
  • Detriment: Sagittarius and Pisces
  • Exaltation: Virgo, at its 15th degree in the traditional list (some disagree with this classification)
  • Fall: Pisces
  • Typical time in one sign: about 14–30 days on a direct pass, most often around 18 (it varies by sign and speed); up to 69 days if Mercury loops back within the sign
  • Retrograde: 287 periods in 1940–2030, usually about 22 days each (range 19–25)
  • Distance from the Sun: at most 27.8° (about 28°) in 1940–2030; most often in the Sun's sign, often one sign away on either side

How to find your Mercury sign

Mercury is one of the 10 bodies Astrolivo's birth chart calculates, alongside the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Enter your birth date, birth time and city. The chart is free, and no sign-up is required before you see the result. See your Mercury sign in your birth chart.

Don't know your birth time? The chart is then calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such. Mercury still appears with its sign, while exact degrees are hidden, and so are the houses, the aspects, the Midheaven and the rising sign. Mercury is quick, though. On a straight pass it usually needs only about two to four weeks to cross a sign, so its sign changes come around often. If you were born on a day when Mercury changed sign, enter your birth time.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

Knowing your Sun sign leaves three candidates. In NASA JPL Horizons data for 1940–2030, Mercury's greatest distance from the Sun, as seen from Earth, is 27.8°. A sign of the zodiac is a 30° sector, so Mercury cannot get further than the sign just before or just after the Sun's. Counted by days over the same years, it was most often in the Sun's own sign and often one sign away on either side. Take an example chart with the Sun in Taurus: its Mercury can only be in Aries, Taurus or Gemini, and the birth year and day decide which.

Each of the planets in astrology carries its own set of themes, and Mercury's center on the mind and on messages. In Roman myth, Mercury is the messenger of the gods, known for his speed. Mercury in astrology stands for communication, thinking patterns, reasoning, adaptability and changeability. Its traditional field covers schooling and learning, the close circle of neighbors, siblings and cousins, short journeys, and messages carried by post, phone or email, as well as writing, newspapers and the knack for gathering information. The tradition sees Mercury's way of working as taking things apart and putting them together again, and describes the planet as curious, opportunistic and unemotional. In modern astrology Mercury also rules the third house.

A Mercury sign is read by running those themes through the sign Mercury occupied: its element, its modality, which in the tradition marks where the sign falls in its season, and the planet that rules it, which becomes Mercury's dispositor unless that planet is Mercury itself. In the Taurus example, a Mercury in Gemini would be read through Air, the Mutable modality and Mercury itself, since Gemini is one of its own signs; a Mercury in Aries would be read through Fire, the Cardinal modality and Mars. Each reading comes from an interpretive tradition that has not been validated by science, so test it against how you actually think and talk rather than taking it as a fact about you.

Mercury in the 12 signs

Every Mercury placement sets the planet's themes of thought, speech and information in one sign's element, modality and ruler, which acts as Mercury's dispositor unless that ruler is Mercury itself. Where two rulers are listed (modern / traditional), the dispositor depends on the rulership system followed, while four placements carry a traditional dignity label and each link opens the full reading.

Dignities: rulership, detriment, exaltation, fall

Every one of Mercury's dignity labels sits in a Mutable sign, the last sign of each season: Gemini and Virgo, which Mercury rules, and Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs across from them. The other eight placements carry none of the four labels.

Rulership (domicile): Gemini and Virgo. In a sign it rules, a planet is said to be dignified, its nature in harmony with the sign's. The classical scheme tied this pair to Mercury's closeness to the Sun. With Leo and Cancer given to the Sun and Moon, and Mercury never appearing more than a sign away from the Sun, it was handed the two neighbors of that pair, Virgo and Gemini. The 27.8° maximum in the ephemeris data agrees with that old reasoning. The two signs share the Mutable modality but differ in the rest: Gemini is Air on the positive side of the polarity divide, Virgo is Earth on the negative side. In either one, Mercury sits in a sign it rules, so it has no separate dispositor.

Exaltation: Virgo, with a caveat. Exaltation is the second label of strength, which traditional horary astrology ranks just below rulership. The traditional list of exaltation degrees puts Mercury's at the 15th degree of Virgo. Of the seven traditional planets, Mercury is the only one whose exaltation falls in a sign it also rules, so in Virgo it holds two labels at once. Not everyone accepts the second one: some disagree with classing Virgo as Mercury's exaltation.

Detriment: Sagittarius and Pisces. Fall: Pisces. Detriment marks the sign across from one a planet rules, and there the planet is described as weakened. Sagittarius lies opposite Gemini and Pisces opposite Virgo, and both belong to Jupiter in the classical list of rulers. Fall is the sign opposite the exaltation, a position of weakness for the planet's function, so Pisces collects both labels, much as Virgo collects rulership and exaltation. Each label keeps its own meaning, and none of them grades the person whose chart it appears in.

Today many astrologers keep only the rulerships from this system and give the other dignities little weight. A growth-oriented approach credits each of Mercury's 12 placements with the same potential for a positive or a negative expression.

Retrograde Mercury

Mercury is called retrograde when, watched from Earth against the stars and the zodiac, it seems to halt and drift westward, backward, for a while, although its orbit never actually reverses.

NASA JPL Horizons data for 1940–2030 count 287 retrograde periods for Mercury, roughly three a year. Each one usually lasted about 22 days, never fewer than 19 and never more than 25.

These loops explain why Mercury's time in a sign varies so much. Passing straight through, it crosses a sign in about 14 to 30 days, depending on the sign and its speed. When a loop falls inside the sign, it can stay there as long as 69 days, more than two months.

If Mercury was retrograde when you were born, chart notation gives it the mark Rx. The tradition reads a natal retrograde as a more inward or deliberate expression of the planet, here of Mercury's thinking and communication.

FAQ

What does your Mercury sign mean? Read through the tradition, it shows how Mercury's themes of thinking, reasoning, communication and gathering information take the color of one sign, through that sign's element, modality and ruler. Each of the 12 placement pages gives the full reading.

Is Mercury always near the Sun? Yes. Its greatest distance from the Sun in the JPL data for 1940–2030, as seen from Earth, is 27.8°, short of one full 30° sign. That is why your Mercury sign is either your Sun sign or one of its two neighbors, and most often the Sun sign itself.

Do you need your birth time to find your Mercury sign? Mercury spends about two to three weeks in a sign on a straight pass, so most birthdays fall inside one stay. If Mercury changed sign on your birthday, add your birth time, since a chart with no birth time is set to 12:00 noon.

How this page was made

Prepared by the Astrolivo editorial team from Mercury and Sun positions in NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data for 1940–2030 and from the Wikipedia articles "Planets in astrology", "Domicile (astrology)", "Exaltation (astrology)", "Essential dignity", "Astrological sign", "Apparent retrograde motion" and "Astrology and science", then fact-checked against them. Meanings and dignity labels are given as readings of the Western tradition.
