Moon Sign Meaning
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional nature: what you need in order to feel safe, how you react when something touches you, and which habits you return to without thinking.
The Moon moves through all 12 signs roughly every 27 days, so at any moment it sits in one of them, and the sign it held at your birth is yours. To find it, calculate your moon sign from your birth date, time and city.
Moon sign vs Sun sign
Most people know their Sun sign. It is what a horoscope column means by "your sign." The two signs describe different things.
- Sun sign. Set by the date of birth, though on the day the Sun changes sign, the time and place decide. Read as the identity you grow into and the goals you pursue. It is the outward, conscious side of a chart.
- Moon sign. Set by the date, the time and the place of birth. Read as your inner weather: moods, comfort, instinctive responses. It is the private side.
The two can agree or pull in different directions. A Sun in Aries with a Moon in Pisces, for example, is traditionally read as someone who acts boldly but feels things gently. Neither sign cancels the other. Together with the Rising sign, they form the "big three" that astrologers usually look at first.
If your Sun sign description never quite fit, the Moon sign is a natural next place to look. Astrologers traditionally read Sun-sign traits as how a person presents themselves at work or in public, and Moon-sign traits as how that person feels at home, or on a bad day. In the older tradition the Moon is also linked to memory, habit and the sense of home, so its sign is where astrologers look for what feels familiar and comforting.
What your Moon sign shapes
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart, and astrology has long linked it to the changeable, personal side of life. Your Moon sign is read in three areas.
Emotions. How feelings arrive and how you handle them. Some Moon signs react quickly and openly. Others take time, keep feelings private, or work them out by talking.
Needs. What makes you feel secure. For one Moon sign that is routine and physical comfort. For another it is closeness, freedom, or a quiet room.
Habits. What you do on autopilot when you are tired or stressed: who you call, how you comfort yourself, what you cannot stand to be without.
Take a tense week as an example. A Fire Moon may say what it feels straight away. An Earth Moon may start tidying or fixing something. An Air Moon may want to talk it over with a friend, and a Water Moon may go quiet for a while. None of these is better; they are different ways of settling.
Your Moon sign is one factor among many. The house the Moon sits in and the angles it makes to other planets add detail, which is why two people with the same Moon sign rarely look identical. Moon sign descriptions are not psychological advice or a diagnosis.
Moon signs by element
The 12 signs fall into four elements, three signs each. The element gives a quick first impression of how a Moon sign tends to feel.
Fire Moon (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). Feelings are quick, warm and visible. Enthusiasm comes easily, and so does frustration. Energy and room to express oneself matter.
Earth Moon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). Feelings are steady and practical. Security tends to come from the tangible: routine, work done well, a reliable base.
Air Moon (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). Feelings are processed through thought and conversation. A little distance helps, and so does the chance to put things into words.
Water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Feelings run deep and often pick up the mood of a room. Closeness and privacy both matter, sometimes at once.
Within each element, the three signs differ in style, which is why the individual pages below go further than this overview.

Everyone shares the Moon's position today, but your Moon sign is the one from the day you were born. The Moon changes sign about every 2.5 days. Moon sign today shows which sign it is in now and when it moves on.
