Midheaven (MC) in Astrology

The Midheaven, or MC, is the point where the ecliptic meets the local meridian in the upper sky at birth. It is drawn at the top of the chart wheel, though it is not literally the highest point of the ecliptic in the sky. In the astrological tradition it stands for public life, vocation and visible goals. Since it passes through every sign in about a day, finding it takes a known birth time.

Midheaven at a glance

  • Also called: MC, short for Medium Coeli
  • Opposite point: the IC, directly across the chart
  • Needs: birth date, birth time and place of birth
  • Related house: the 10th, whose cusp it marks in quadrant house systems

MC, IC, Ascendant and Descendant

A chart has four angles. They are not among the planets in astrology and are not bodies at all: they are calculated points that come from Earth turning on its axis, seen from one place at one moment. They sit on the ecliptic, the great circle that traces the Sun's yearly path as seen from Earth.

Two of the angles come from the local meridian. The Midheaven is where the ecliptic crosses it in the upper sky.

The IC is the point directly opposite the MC, at the bottom of the chart. Since every house cusp sits 180° from the sixth house after it, in a quadrant house system the IC is where the 4th house begins, just as the MC is where the 10th begins.

The other two angles come from the horizon. Every house system places the start of the 1st house near the eastern horizon, and the Ascendant (rising sign) is the reference point the houses are arranged from.

The Descendant is the point opposite the Ascendant, on the other side of the chart. Together the four angles give the chart two axes, Ascendant to Descendant and MC to IC. Commonly, houses one through six sit below the horizon and houses seven through twelve above it, with the MC at the top of the upper half and the IC at the bottom of the lower one.

The Midheaven and the 10th house

The Midheaven and the 10th house are easy to mix up, because they share themes and often share a starting line. Whether they share that line depends on the house system.

In quadrant house systems, the MC is the cusp of the 10th house, the line where that house begins. The house system Astrolivo uses is one of them. In an example chart where Gemini sits on the Midheaven, a quadrant system puts Gemini on the 10th-house cusp as well, and Sagittarius on the IC and the 4th-house cusp.

Whole sign and equal houses work differently. In these two systems the Midheaven does not act as the cusp or starting point of the 10th house. It moves around the top half of the chart and can land anywhere from the 7th to the 12th house, depending on the latitude. In equal houses the reason is geometric: the two axes, Ascendant to Descendant and MC to IC, are not always at right angles. Near the equator they are off by about 5° at most, but toward the polar circle the gap can reach 90°, so twelve equal houses counted from the Ascendant cannot, as a rule, put the MC on the 10th-house cusp.

The MC keeps its commonly agreed meanings in these systems. It is just no longer where the 10th house starts. This is a common criticism of whole sign and equal houses: since the point shares its themes with the 10th house, many astrologers feel it belongs on that house's cusp.

Midheaven meaning in the tradition

The Midheaven sits at the top of the chart, and the tradition gives it the themes of public life, vocation and visible goals. It is also associated with ambition, career and public image, and by extension with Capricorn, the tenth sign of the zodiac. Put plainly, it is the part of the chart read for what a person aims at in view of others.

Career and ambition are also 10th-house themes, but the two are different kinds of thing: the MC is a single point on the ecliptic, while a house is a whole sector of the chart that can also hold planets.

Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so the Midheaven describes themes of public life and vocation, not a career, a level of success or a status anyone is bound to reach.

Find your Midheaven

The Midheaven depends on the meridian of the place of birth, and as Earth turns, every degree of the ecliptic crosses that meridian once a day. The MC therefore passes through all twelve signs in about a day and changes sign roughly every couple of hours. Two people born on the same date in the same city, a few hours apart, can have their Midheavens in different signs.

To see yours, enter your birth date, time and city: Find your Midheaven (birth time needed). The chart is free, with no sign-up required for the result. With a known birth time, it shows the ten bodies from the Sun to Pluto, the Ascendant and the Midheaven, and which house each body occupies.

If you do not know your birth time, the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as a noon chart. The Ascendant, the Midheaven, the houses, exact degrees and aspects are then hidden.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

FAQ

How do I find my Midheaven? You need your birth date, the city you were born in and, above all, the time of birth. The place gives the local meridian, and the time decides which degree of the ecliptic was crossing it. Without the time, there is no reliable Midheaven.

What is the difference between the Midheaven and the Ascendant? They come from two different lines. The Ascendant comes from the horizon and is the reference point the houses are arranged from, with the 1st house starting near the eastern horizon. The Midheaven comes from the meridian, at the top of the chart. Both need a birth time, and both change through the day.
