October 22 Zodiac Sign: Libra or Scorpio?

October 22 is a cusp birthday: in 10 of the 87 years from 1940 to 2026 the Sun entered Scorpio during October 22 (US Eastern Time), so people born that day are Libra before the change time and Scorpio after it; in 77 years the change came later and the whole day was Libra. Your sign depends on the year and time of birth — see the table. Pacific Time: change during the day in 18 years, whole day Scorpio in 0, whole day Libra in 69.

Every birth year has a New York reading on Eastern time and a Los Angeles reading on Pacific time; go by the coast of your birthplace. A blank there leaves the date to Libra from 00:00 to 23:59. A time there is the minute Scorpio arrived, so births before it were Libra and births from it onward Scorpio. The same instant can fall on different dates on the two coasts. At the instant Scorpio arrived in 1988, New York clocks read 00:44 EDT on October 23 and Los Angeles clocks 21:44 PDT on October 22; only the Pacific side of that year carries a time. Central and Mountain clocks are left out of the table, so births on them go straight to the birth chart. For every other October birthday, see October zodiac signs.

From 1940 the Eastern side stays blank for more than half a century: its first October 22 time is 23:57 EDT in 1992, and no Eastern time on this date since then is later. Eight more birth years show an October 22 time on the Pacific side only: 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021. New York kept Libra for all of October 22 in those years, while Los Angeles clocks logged the crossing before their own midnight, 21:44 PDT (1988) the earliest and 23:58 PDT (1976) the latest.

A recorded birth time settles October 22 whenever your coast shows a change for the year, and it settles a Central or Mountain birth as well. Put the date, the recorded hour and the birthplace into Astrolivo's birth chart to check your Sun sign with your birth time; there is no fee, and registration is not required. An unknown hour means the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

Element and polarity both change hands at the Sun's crossing on October 22, as do the modality and the ruler. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, and which side of the crossing a birth lands on does not make either word list true of the person.

The hours before the crossing belong to Libra, and so do all 24 of them when your coast saw no crossing that day. Air is its element, as it is for Gemini and Aquarius, and the old element scheme calls Air light, hot and wet. In the polarity split Libra counts as positive, the active half that astrology also calls yang. The planet in charge is Venus, carrying astrology's themes of pleasure, comfort and ease. What remains of the date after the crossing is Scorpio's, a Water sign like Cancer and Pisces. Water's words in the same scheme trade Air's warmth for cold: cold, wet and soft. Polarity flips to negative, the receptive or yin half. Pluto, its modern ruler, stands in astrology for absolutes, extremities and transformations; in the traditional scheme the ruler is Mars. Scorpio's traits and start times are gathered on the Scorpio zodiac sign page.

FAQ

Does being born on October 22 put someone "on the cusp"? As a figure of speech, yes. Scorpio can begin before October 22 is over, which is why people use the popular word "cusp" for this birthday. No birth can straddle the crossing, so each one has a single Sun sign. On Eastern and Pacific clocks in 1940–2030 the default is Libra; Scorpio applies only when that year's crossing fell on October 22 locally and the birth came at or after it.

What time does the Sun change sign on October 22? On Eastern and Pacific clocks, 1940–2030, it comes in the second half of the day whenever it happens at all, the earliest being the computed 2028 times: 17:13 EDT and 14:13 PDT. On New York clocks, birth years 1940–2026 put it between 18:15 EDT (2024) and 23:57 EDT (1992); on Los Angeles clocks, between 15:15 PDT (2024) and 23:58 PDT (1976). In a year with no change on October 22 on a given coast, Scorpio arrived there on a later date.

How this page was made

Prepared and fact-checked by the Astrolivo editorial team. Each change moment is a Sun ingress from NASA JPL Horizons for 1940–2030, converted to local time with the IANA rules for the Eastern and Pacific zones, daylight time included. Sign labels and planet themes follow Wikipedia's entries on astrological signs, the classical elements in astrology, triplicity, planets in astrology, and astrology and science, and they are given as the tradition's readings.
