October Zodiac Signs: Libra and Scorpio
October: Libra until the Sun enters Scorpio. In US Eastern Time the change fell on October 22 in 10 years, October 23 in 72 years, October 24 in 5 years (birth years 1940-2026, JPL Horizons); on those days the sign depends on the year and time of birth.

October birthdays day by day
Find the day in the left column. For births 1940–2026, by Eastern or Pacific clocks, the calendar day is enough to name the October zodiac sign for the first 21 days and the last 7; each year the Sun moves on to Scorpio during just one of the three dates between them, which is why those rows link to their own pages.
| Day of October | Sun sign, US Eastern Time (birth years 1940-2026) |
|---|---|
| October 1–21 | Libra in every year |
| October 22 | Libra all day in 77 years; changed to Scorpio during the day in 10 years |
| October 23 | Libra all day in 5 years; changed to Scorpio during the day in 72 years; Scorpio all day in 10 years |
| October 24 | changed to Scorpio during the day in 5 years; Scorpio all day in 82 years |
| October 25–31 | Scorpio in every year |
Every row is read on Eastern clocks. A switch in the first hour after Eastern midnight falls on the prior calendar evening for anyone born in the Central, Mountain or Pacific zone, and a switch in the last hours of an Eastern evening already carries the following day's date in UTC.
Libra in October
The Sun enters Libra in the last days of September, around September 22–23 on Eastern clocks, so October keeps the later and longer part of the sign. In US Eastern Time and for births 1940–2026, that means all of October 1 through 21, plus whatever hours of October 22, 23 or 24 came before that year's switch.
The classical element list gives Air three words: light, hot and wet. Air is also the element of Gemini and Aquarius, and with Libra the three signs make one triplicity. Libra opens autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, beginning at the September equinox, and opens spring in the Southern Hemisphere, where the seasons run the other way; that first-of-the-season place is what makes it Cardinal, a modality the tradition associates with action. Of the two polarities, Libra carries the positive one, which is also called active.
Here and in the Scorpio section below, the page gives the tradition's associations for each sign's ruler: astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so these associations belong to the signs and do not describe you or anyone else with an October birthday. Venus rules Libra, as it rules Taurus, and astrologers link Venus with seeking pleasure, comfort and ease. The Libra zodiac sign page carries the full reading of the sign.
Scorpio in October
Scorpio starts during October 22, 23 or 24, whichever date the year's switch fell on, and keeps the Sun until it moves on to Sagittarius around November 21–23, Eastern Time. That leaves October with just the first days of the sign: from the switch hour through October 31.
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the three Water signs, and Water's classical description is cold, wet and soft. Scorpio sits halfway through northern autumn, and through southern spring, and that mid-season seat earns it the label Fixed. On polarity, Scorpio counts as negative, a term the tradition pairs with receptive.
Two planets rule Scorpio. Mars holds the classical rulership and has Aries as its other sign. Pluto became the modern ruler in the 20th century; astrologers call it "the great renewer" and tie it to power and to a kind of renewal that begins with destruction.
The late-October change, then, swaps Air for Water and Cardinal for Fixed, and it also changes how many rulers the sign has. Libra answers to Venus in the classical lists and the modern ones alike, while Scorpio is one of three signs (the others are Aquarius and Pisces) that pair a classical ruler with a 20th-century one. Born near the change
"Cusp" is the word many people use for an October 22, 23 or 24 birthday, but the label points at the calendar, not at the sky. The Sun crossed from Libra to Scorpio at a single moment, and a birth came either before it or after it.
The hour narrows the answer. For birth years 1940–2026, an October 22 birth before 6 p.m. Eastern Time, or 3 p.m. Pacific Time, was Libra in every year, because no switch on that date came any earlier. An October 24 birth after 3:10 a.m. Eastern, or 12:10 a.m. Pacific, was Scorpio in every year. October 23 has no such cutoff: the switch has come anywhere from just after midnight to late evening, so the birth year and the clock time both count.
Year-by-year switch times, by Eastern and by Pacific clocks, appear on the October 22 zodiac sign, October 23 zodiac sign and October 24 zodiac sign pages. If your birthday is one of those three, add the hour and city of birth along with the date to check with your birth time; there is no charge and no account to create. With the time field blank, your chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such.
Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.
The month before is covered under September zodiac signs, the month after under November zodiac signs, and all twelve under birthday zodiac signs.
FAQ
What zodiac sign is October? Libra on October 1 through 21 and Scorpio on October 25 through 31, across birth years 1940–2026 by US Eastern Time, and by Pacific clocks as well. A birthday on October 22, 23 or 24 can be either sign, so the birth year and the hour come into it.
Is October 23 Libra or Scorpio? That varies by year. In most birth years the switch to Scorpio happened at some point during October 23, so only the birth time can tell; in a few years Libra held all 24 hours, and in a few others Scorpio did.
What are the 12 star signs? In zodiac order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. October's two are the seventh and the eighth.
