Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

The fire signs are Aries (March 20 – April 19), Leo (July 22 – August 22) and Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21), with usual dates given in US Eastern Time. In Western astrology they make up the Fire triplicity, and the tradition links fire with action, warmth and open, outward expression.

Fire signs at a glance

  • Signs (usual dates, ET): Aries (March 20 – April 19), Leo (July 22 – August 22), Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21)
  • Modalities: Aries Cardinal, Leo Fixed, Sagittarius Mutable
  • Rulers (modern / traditional): Mars (Aries), Sun (Leo), Jupiter (Sagittarius); the same in both
  • Classical qualities: hot and dry
  • Polarity: positive (active, yang)
  • Opposite element on the wheel: Air (Aries – Libra, Leo – Aquarius, Sagittarius – Gemini)

What fire means in astrology

Fire was a philosophical idea before it was an astrological one. The Greek philosopher Empedocles counted it, around 450 BC, as one of four "roots" of all matter, alongside earth, air and water. Aristotle later described each of the four by a pair of qualities, and fire is the one that is both hot and dry. Hellenistic astrologers attached these elements to the twelve signs, and most modern astrologers still treat them as a core part of reading a chart.

Fire can be read through those two qualities. Heat is read as energy that moves out toward the world; dryness as something that holds its own shape instead of soaking up its surroundings. Fire is also one of the two positive elements, along with Air, a polarity the tradition calls active and expressive. Put together, a fire placement is described as acting before it reflects, being direct about what it wants and running on enthusiasm. The same reading has a downside: impatience when things stall, and energy that flares quickly and can run out just as fast.

The three fire signs

All three share an element and sit 120° apart on the wheel, the angle astrology calls a trine. What separates them is modality. In the tradition, the mix of element and modality is what gives each sign its own character, so the same fire behaves three different ways.

Aries is cardinal fire, ruled by Mars. A sign's modality comes from its position within its season: Aries falls in the first month of Northern Hemisphere spring, so astrologers class it as cardinal, the modality of starting. Read through fire, that becomes the spark that gets something going: the first move, the opening offer, the idea pitched before anyone has asked for one. More on the sign in the Aries guide.

Leo is fixed fire, ruled by the Sun. Where cardinal fire lights something, the tradition reads fixed fire as keeping it lit: the same enthusiasm, held for months or years rather than minutes. Astrologers describe this as fire with staying power, and its shadow side as reluctance to change course once committed. The Leo guide covers the sign itself.

Sagittarius is mutable fire, ruled by Jupiter. Mutable signs are read as the adaptable ones, and mutable fire as enthusiasm that travels: it follows a new interest, switches direction when a better idea turns up and feels less tied to the first plan. Next to Aries opening things and Leo holding them, Sagittarius is pictured as fire on the move. See the Sagittarius guide for the rest.

Fire in a birth chart

Calling someone a fire sign usually refers to one placement: the sign the Sun was in at birth, the focus of popular sun-sign astrology. A full chart says more. The Moon, the Ascendant (the degree of the ecliptic rising at the moment of birth) and each planet also sit in a sign, and some astrologers open a reading by looking at how the elements are spread across them, the Sun and Moon especially. So a person with a Water Sun can have plenty of fire, and a fire-sign Sun can be the only fire in the chart.

Take an example chart with a Scorpio Sun, the Moon in Aries, Leo rising, and Mercury and Mars in Sagittarius. By Sun sign alone this is a Water chart. Yet four placements sit in fire, and they cover all three fire signs: cardinal, fixed and mutable. An astrologer would note that this chart holds more fire than its Sun sign suggests, then look at how those three styles of fire sit next to a Water Sun. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so treat a fire count as a theme to test against your own experience.

To find your own fire, open your free birth chart with your date, time and city of birth; no sign-up is needed. The result lists the sign of each of the ten bodies, and with a known birth time it also shows the Ascendant and the house of each body. Without a birth time the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked that way, and the rising sign and houses are hidden. Go down the list and note which placements land in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius; the count is something you do by hand.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

Fire with other elements

Any pairing with fire can be compared in three ways: position on the wheel, polarity, and the four qualities of hot, cold, dry and wet.

Two fire signs share all three: the same triplicity, 120° apart in a trine, the same positive polarity, and both heat and dryness. Astrologers describe trines as comfortable, free-flowing links, so fire with fire is read as quick mutual recognition. Fire and Air face each other across the wheel: Aries opposite Libra, Leo opposite Aquarius, Sagittarius opposite Gemini. Both are positive elements and both are hot, but fire is dry and air is wet. The tradition reads this as two outgoing elements meeting from opposite sides.

With the two receptive elements, fire shares one quality or none. Fire and the Earth signs are neither the same nor opposite on the wheel and differ in polarity, but both are dry; astrologers connect that shared dryness with a common interest in results you can see and touch. Fire and the Water signs share nothing on this scheme: fire is positive, hot and dry, water is negative, cold and wet. The tradition reads that as a full contrast of styles, which describes the elements, not any two people.

FAQ

What are the fire signs? Aries, Leo and Sagittarius: the 1st, 5th and 9th signs of the zodiac. The four elements take turns around the wheel, starting with Fire at Aries, so fire comes back with every fourth sign.

Is Sagittarius a fire sign? Yes. Sagittarius is the mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter. It comes right after Scorpio, a water sign, and right before Capricorn, an earth sign.

Which signs are air and fire? Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Together they are the six positive, or active, signs, the odd-numbered ones, and each fire sign sits opposite an air sign. Compare them with Earth and Water on the all four elements overview.
