Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces
There are three water signs in the zodiac: Cancer, usually June 20 – July 22; Scorpio, October 23 – November 21; and Pisces, February 18 – March 20 (US Eastern Time). Astrology pairs water with feeling and receptiveness: taking experience in, holding on to it, and responding to people before reasoning about them.

What water means in astrology
Water's place in astrology goes back to Greek natural philosophy. In the fifth century BC Empedocles listed it among four "roots" that mix to form everything else, and Aristotle later gave each element two of the four sensible qualities, making water both cold and wet. When Greek astrology joined the elements to the signs, water came last in the order Fire, Earth, Air, Water that repeats around the wheel.
Water is the only element that is both cold and wet, and each of those qualities links it to a neighbor. Cold, shared with earth, is read as turning inward: water is described as taking something in before giving anything back. Wet, shared with air, is read as joining and taking shape from what surrounds it, the way water fills whatever holds it. Water also sits with earth on the receptive side of the zodiac, so a water placement is pictured as responding rather than announcing.
The tradition describes water through what it notices and keeps: the friend who remembers something you mentioned months ago and asks how it turned out, the coworker who reads a short email twice before deciding how to answer. The caution attached to the same quality is that what water takes in is not always let out, so a reply, a complaint or a plain request can wait longer than it should.
The three water signs
In the tradition a sign's character comes from its element and modality together, so the three water signs are read as water that starts, water that holds and water that changes shape.
Cancer is cardinal water, ruled by the Moon. Cardinal signs are read as the ones that begin things, and cardinal water as acting on what it has taken in: calling the friend who has canceled plans twice in a row, sending the first message after a falling-out. Its weak point, in the same reading, is acting on a sense of the situation that nobody has confirmed. Cancer has its own page with dates, symbol and myth.
Scorpio is fixed water, with Pluto as its modern ruler and Mars as its traditional one. Fixed signs are read as the ones that sustain, and fixed water as feeling held over time and aimed at a few things: one long project followed to the end, a question kept open until it has an answer. The tradition's caution is that a conclusion, once settled, is hard to revise. The sign itself is covered on the Scorpio page.
Pisces is mutable water, ruled by Neptune in modern astrology and by Jupiter traditionally. Mutable signs are read as adaptable, and mutable water as water that changes shape with its surroundings: a plan rewritten to fit the people in it, an opinion softened after hearing the other side out. Read the other way, a plan that bends this easily can lose its original point. The full sign profile is on the Pisces page.
Water in a birth chart
Most talk of water signs is about the Sun sign, the placement that simplified, popular sun-sign astrology puts first. A full chart puts the Moon, the Ascendant and every planet in a sign too, and some astrologers open a natal reading by checking how the elements fall across those placements and the chart's angles, the Sun and Moon above all. Water can run strong in a chart with a fire or air Sun, and a Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces Sun can turn out to be a chart's only water.
Here is an example chart: Sun in Aries, Moon in Scorpio, Mercury in Pisces, Venus in Taurus, and Cancer rising. The Sun is fire, the element that shares no quality with water, yet three placements sit in water signs, one in each of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Two of them are the Moon, which gets special attention in that kind of reading, and the Ascendant, one of the chart's angles. Since astrology is an interpretive tradition and not a scientifically validated method, read any water tally as a question to bring to your own experience.
To look at your own chart, enter your birth date, time and city in the free birth chart; no account is needed. The result gives the sign of each of the ten bodies from the Sun to Pluto, and you mark the ones in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces yourself. The rising sign and houses appear only with a known birth time. Without one, the chart is set for 12:00 noon and labeled as such, and the Ascendant, Midheaven, houses and aspects stay hidden.
Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.
Water with other elements
Water can be set against each element on three points: shared triplicity or opposition on the wheel, matching polarity, and how much of cold and wet the other element has.
A pair of water signs agrees on all three. They sit 120° apart, a trine, the angle astrologers describe as comfortable and free-flowing; both are receptive, and both are cold and wet, so the pair is read as easy mutual understanding. Earth is the element across the wheel from water. Here opposition does not mean nothing in common: both are receptive and both are cold, and they part only where earth is dry and water wet. Astrologers read the pair as two kinds of steadiness, one practical and one felt.
Air signs and Fire signs are neither in water's triplicity nor opposite it, and both belong to the active half of the zodiac. Air shares wetness with water, a meeting point the tradition reads as both elements reaching toward other people, air by talking and water by responding. Fire shares nothing: hot and dry against cold and wet, active against receptive. Astrologers read that as the sharpest contrast water meets, quick outward action against slower inward response. Element pairings compare symbols; they are not a forecast for any relationship. Every pair is laid out together on all four elements.
FAQ
What are the water signs? Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Because water closes each round of Fire, Earth, Air, Water, the water signs are the 4th, 8th and 12th signs, so the zodiac ends on water.
Is Scorpio a water sign? Yes. Scorpio is water in its fixed form, the middle member of the trio between cardinal Cancer and mutable Pisces. Its modern ruler is Pluto; in traditional astrology it is Mars.
What months are the water signs? Each one spans the end of one month and most of the next: Cancer from June 20 into late July, Scorpio from October 23 into late November, and Pisces from February 18 to about March 20. On a boundary day, birth time and place decide the sign.
How this page was made
The Astrolivo editorial team prepared this guide from the Wikipedia articles "Classical element," "Astrological sign," "Triplicity," and "Astrology and science," and from NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data (2020–2030, US Eastern Time) for the usual sign dates, then checked each fact against those sources. Sign and element meanings are presented as readings within the astrological tradition.
