The 11th House

In Western astrology, the 11th house, or eleventh house, is the house of friends, groups and community. Its common modern name is the House of Blessings, and its themes include social networks, alliances, charity, and the hopes and wishes people pursue alongside like-minded others. Its natural sign is Aquarius, and modern astrologers count Uranus as its primary ruler.

The 11th house at a glance

  • Common name: House of Blessings (traditional Latin name Benefacta, "Support")
  • Core themes: friendships, groups, community, hopes and wishes
  • House type: Succedent
  • Natural sign and planet: Aquarius and Uranus (traditional ruler Saturn)
  • Angle: None (not an angular house)

What the 11th house covers

Eleventh house astrology looks at the circle a person chooses: friends, acquaintances who share an outlook, and the groups, communities and associations they join. The tradition's list also takes in networking, belonging, charity and alliances. Astrologers describe it as the sphere of shared ideals pursued as a group, of aspirations aimed at the future, and of taking part in collective movements.

In everyday terms, think of the group chat that has outlived three jobs, a neighborhood volunteer crew, a hiking club, or a fan forum whose members meet in person once a year. The focus is less any single friend than the circle itself and what it gathers for.

Behind the modern name, House of Blessings, and the older Latin Benefacta, "Support," the tradition reads support between people: who backs a plan, who gets asked for a favor. It also reads hopes and wishes, the plans a person keeps for later. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so these are themes, not forecasts of who will help or which wishes come true.

Like the 2nd, 5th and 8th, the 11th is succedent, a type the tradition ties to stabilization, purpose and the fixed signs. Aquarius fits the pattern as a fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn in the classical scheme and by Uranus since the 20th century.

The sign on the 11th house cusp

The 11th begins at its cusp, and the sign found there depends on the time and place of birth. Astrologers read that sign's element, modality and ruler for how friendships and group life tend to run.

In an example chart with Sagittarius on the 11th house cusp, the house opens in mutable fire, ruled by Jupiter, the planet of growth, expansion and adventure. The tradition reads a wide, loosely knit circle: friends met while traveling or studying, and groups that form around a big idea.

Taurus there gives fixed earth and Venus, which is linked with affection, harmony and comfort. Friendships are read as slow to form and long to last, kept going by standing routines such as the same Sunday dinner or a book club that has met for a decade.

Scorpio on the cusp is fixed water with two rulers, Mars in the classical scheme and Pluto in the modern one. Pluto is tied to intensity, power and transformation, so the reading is a small, fiercely loyal circle, with a sharp eye for who holds sway in a group.

Planets in the 11th house

A planet in the 11th house colors friendships, groups and long-range hopes with its own themes. Ten bodies spread over twelve houses leave some houses crowded and others empty, so several planets here, or none, is normal.

  • Sun: the self, its expression and leadership, read as an identity shaped partly by a person's groups, with a pull toward a visible role in them.
  • Moon: emotions, moods, the urge to nurture and the need for security. Friends are read as a source of comfort, and a club or circle can feel like home base.
  • Mercury: communication, curiosity and information gathering, read as a wide web of acquaintances and a habit of passing news and ideas through it.
  • Venus: affection, harmony and the urge to unite with others, read as warm, easy friendships and circles built around art or shared taste.
  • Mars: energy, courage and competition. Mars governs sports and competitions, so teams, leagues and causes that need a push fit the reading, along with some friction inside groups.
  • Jupiter: growth, expansion and adventure, read as a circle that spans backgrounds and countries, and large plans made together.
  • Saturn: the classical ruler of Aquarius, the 11th's natural sign. Duty, commitment and long-term planning are read as a few friendships kept for years and formal roles in organizations.
  • Uranus: in modern astrology the primary native ruler of this house. It governs societies, clubs and groups built on humanitarian or progressive ideals, read here as unconventional friends and reform-minded circles.
  • Neptune: some modern authors link Neptune with Aquarius (it has no classical exaltation). Idealism, empathy and the collective consciousness point to idealistic causes and charity, along with friendships whose edges can blur.
  • Pluto: "the great renewer," linked with power, mass movements and the need to cooperate or share. Read as intense involvement in collective efforts that aim to change the existing order.

How to find your 11th house

For the 11th, check three things: the sign on its cusp, any planets inside, and the house where that sign's ruler sits. In quadrant house systems the 10th begins at the Midheaven, so the 11th is the next house counter-clockwise from it. Then put your birth date, exact time and city into the birth chart calculator. With a known time, the result shows the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the house of each of the ten bodies; with no birth time, houses stay hidden. Because house systems divide the sky in different ways, a planet near the start or end of the 11th can belong to the 10th or 12th in another system; the houses page explains the one Astrolivo uses.

On the wheel, the 11th comes after the 10th house, the House of Enterprise, about career and public standing, and before the 12th house, the House of Sacrifice, about solitude, privacy and the hidden side of life. See all 12 houses for the full wheel.

FAQ

What does it mean if my 11th house is empty? It does not mean a life without friends or community, and the tradition does not read an empty house as a missing area of life. Ten bodies cannot fill twelve houses. The 11th still has a sign on its cusp, and that sign has a ruler placed somewhere in the chart. In an example chart with Gemini on an empty 11th, the reading turns to Mercury and the house it occupies.

How is the 11th house different from the 5th house? The 5th sits directly opposite, since every house cusp is 180° from the sixth house after it, and their natural signs, Leo and Aquarius, are an opposite pair as well. Both are succedent. The 5th, the House of Pleasure, lists recreation, creativity, romance and self-expression. The 11th, the House of Blessings, lists friends, groups, associations, charity and networking. The tradition draws the line between what a person does for their own enjoyment and what they take part in with others.
