The 12 Houses in Astrology
The 12 houses in astrology divide a birth chart into areas of life, and where each house begins depends on the time and place of birth, not just the date. In the tradition, planets show what is at work, signs show how it comes across, and houses show where in life it plays out.

The natural sign column follows a modern habit: many astrologers pair each house with the sign of the same number, so the 1st goes with Aries, the first sign, and the 12th with Pisces, the last. Houses 1 through 6 usually sit below the horizon and 7 through 12 above it. Each house also faces the one six places later, so the 1st sits opposite the 7th, the 2nd opposite the 8th, and so on around the wheel.
Houses, signs and planets: how they fit
A chart has three layers that are read together. A planet names the drive at work. The sign it sits in colors how that drive comes out. The house places it in a field of experience, both the physical surroundings and the personal situations where it shows up.
Signs and houses are easy to mix up, since each house is paired with a natural sign. They run on different clocks, though. A planet's sign comes from its position along the zodiac, while the houses come from the time and place of birth. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign and still have the Sun in different houses.
Take an example chart with Venus in Gemini in the 10th house. The tradition ties Venus to pleasure, comfort, ease and the arts. Gemini is one of the mutable signs, the group the tradition pairs with change and adaptation. The 10th house adds the setting: career, ambitions and public reputation. An astrologer would read this as Venus themes, such as ease and a taste for the arts, showing up mainly in working and public life, in a changeable, many-sided style rather than one fixed role.
Why houses need your birth time
Every house system depends on the Earth turning on its axis. As it turns, the sign rising on the eastern horizon, the Ascendant, changes through the day, and the houses turn with it. So a house calculation needs the exact time, date and place of birth. The link between rising signs and time is old. By the 3rd century BCE, Egyptians watched which star groups were rising to tell the approximate time of night, and the Greek word later used for the Ascendant, horoskopos, means "hour marker."
With a known time, the free birth chart calculator shows the ten bodies (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the house each body falls in. You enter your date, time and city of birth, and you don't need to sign up to see the result.
If the time is unknown, Astrolivo calculates the chart for 12:00 noon and marks it as a noon chart. The Ascendant, Midheaven, houses, exact degrees and aspects are hidden, since all of them depend on the time. If you are missing a time, read what to do if you don't know your birth time.
Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.
House systems
There is more than one way to divide a chart into twelve houses. Some systems cut a circle of the sky into equal 30° arcs. Others divide time, for example into equal two-hour blocks of the Sun's daily motion across the sky. All of them start the 1st house near the eastern horizon, but the other boundaries can fall in different places.
Astrolivo currently uses Placidus. It is a quadrant system: the Ascendant marks the start of the 1st house and the Midheaven marks the start of the 10th. Charts are calculated in the tropical zodiac, and there is no setting to change the zodiac or the house system.
Two other systems you may come across are Whole Sign and Equal. In Whole Sign houses, each house is one complete sign. The 1st house starts at 0° of the rising sign, however early or late in that sign the Ascendant falls, and the next sign becomes the 2nd house. It may date to Hellenistic astrology around the 1st or 2nd century BCE; it fell out of use in the West in the medieval period and was brought back in the 1980s and 1990s. In Equal houses, every house is also 30°, but the count starts from the exact degree of the Ascendant.
Because the boundaries differ, the same planet can land in one house under Placidus and in a different house under Whole Sign or Equal. No system meets every goal astrologers set for one, and the debate over their merits is still going. One known limit of Placidus is the far north and south. Beyond the polar circles, above about 66° latitude, some degrees of the zodiac never touch the horizon, and the houses may not be defined. Above that latitude Astrolivo shows the houses in the Whole Sign system instead, with a visible label.
Angular, succedent and cadent houses
Signs are grouped into three modalities: cardinal, fixed and mutable. Houses have a matching set of three groups, and each group lines up with one modality.
- Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th). The tradition calls them points of initiation and ties them to action and to the cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Their themes are self, home, partnership and public standing.
- Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th). Points of purpose, tied to stabilization and to the fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Here the themes are what a person holds and builds on: possessions, creative pleasures, shared resources and friendships.
- Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th). Points of transition, tied to change and adaptation and to the mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Their themes lean toward learning and adjusting: everyday talk, daily routines, beliefs and retreat.
Houses can also be grouped by the four elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water, into sets of three, each tied to a level of experience.
Empty houses
With a known birth time, the calculator places ten bodies across twelve houses, so every chart has at least two houses with no planet in them. That is normal. The tradition does not read an empty house as a missing or switched-off area of life.
An empty house still has a sign on its cusp, and that sign has a ruling planet. Old astrology texts even used "house" to mean a planet's home sign: "the Moon has its house in Cancer" meant that the Moon rules Cancer. Think of each house as a rented building. The cusp sign acts as the landlord, the planet ruling that sign is the owner, and a planet sitting in the house is a tenant. With no tenant, astrologers look to the landlord for the tone of the house and to the owner, wherever it sits in the chart, for where those themes get carried out. When you apply this to your own chart, keep in mind that astrology is an interpretive tradition that controlled scientific testing has not supported, so a house points to themes, not outcomes.
FAQ
How many houses are there in astrology? Twelve. Every Western house system uses twelve houses, counted from the 1st, which starts near the eastern horizon, around the wheel to the 12th. Each one has a common modern name and an older Latin one, and many astrologers pair it with a natural sign, from Aries for the 1st to Pisces for the 12th.
Which house is about relationships or career? In the tradition, the 7th house, the House of Balance, covers partnerships, including marriage and business partners, agreements and contracts. The 10th house covers career, ambitions, public reputation and social standing. Both name themes the tradition links with those areas; neither says how a relationship or a career will go.
What if I don't know my birth time? You can still get a chart, but without houses. The calculator works from 12:00 noon and hides the houses, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, exact degrees and aspects. See what to do if you don't know your birth time.
