The 7th House

In Western astrology, the 7th house, or seventh house, is the House of Balance. It opens at the Descendant, the western horizon point of a birth chart, and the tradition ties it to one-to-one relationships: marriage, business partnerships, contracts and agreements, and the "open enemies" a person faces across the table.

The 7th house at a glance

  • Common name: House of Balance (traditional Latin name Uxor, "Spouse")
  • Core themes: partnership, marriage, contracts, open enemies, balance
  • House type: Angular
  • Natural sign and planet: Libra and Venus
  • Angle: Descendant on its cusp

What the 7th house covers

Seventh house astrology is about the people someone deals with as equals, one at a time. Its Latin name, Uxor, means "spouse," and marriage heads its traditional list, which is why the 7th is the house of marriage in astrology. It also takes in business partnerships, diplomacy, agreements, "contracts and all things official," and equilibrium.

Think of two co-founders deciding who handles what, a couple choosing whose name goes on the lease, a freelancer and client trading edits on a contract, roommates settling who pays which bill. Astrologers describe the house as the point where personal identity meets "the Other," and as a mirror: people tend to look for certain qualities in a partner, and sometimes project them onto one.

The tradition also places "open enemies" here, the opponents a person deals with in plain view: a business rival, a former partner in a dispute, the other side in a lawsuit. Cooperation and conflict share one house because both mean dealing with a counterpart on stated terms. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so on marriage, contracts and open enemies the 7th house offers themes, not diagnoses or forecasts: it cannot say whether or when someone marries, whom they meet, or how a legal case ends.

As an angular house, alongside the 1st, 4th and 10th, the 7th is linked with initiation and action and corresponds to the cardinal signs. Many modern astrologers pair it with Libra, the cardinal air sign, and Venus, Libra's ruler.

The sign on the 7th house cusp

A cusp is where a house begins. In most house systems, the 7th house cusp is the Descendant, the point where the ecliptic meets the western horizon. Every house cusp sits 180° from the cusp six houses on, so the Descendant lies directly opposite the Ascendant, and the sign on the 7th cusp is the opposite of the rising sign. That sign's element, modality and ruler color how the tradition reads partnership in a given chart.

Take an example chart with Capricorn rising, which puts Cancer on the 7th cusp. Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, a planet tied to emotions, nurturing and the need for security. The reading is a search for a partner who feels like home, with loyalty shown through care.

Swap in Pisces rising and the 7th opens in Virgo, a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. Partnership is then read through practical talk: chores divided clearly, the fine print actually read, small problems raised early.

With Leo rising, Aquarius sits on the 7th: a fixed air sign, ruled by Uranus in modern astrology and by Saturn traditionally. Uranus brings freedom and individuality, so the tradition pictures partnerships that need breathing room.

Planets in the 7th house

A planet in the 7th house brings its own meaning to partnership, agreements and open rivalry. Traditional astrology held that a planet in an angular house such as the 7th is more able to act. Some charts have several planets here and many have none; either is normal.

  • Sun: the self and its expression, pride and authority, read as identity taking shape through partnership.
  • Moon: emotions, moods, the need for security and the ability to react and adapt to people nearby. A close partner sets much of the emotional weather.
  • Mercury: communication and reasoning, and the planet astrology links with day-to-day relationships. Agreements get talked through, written down and revisited.
  • Venus: ruler of Libra, the natural sign of this house, and associated with harmony, affection, marriage and business partnerships. The tradition reads a strong pull toward cooperation and fair, pleasant terms.
  • Mars: courage, energy, confrontation and impulse. Where Venus tends the overall mood of a relationship, Mars supplies the drive: disagreements get aired rather than avoided.
  • Jupiter: growth, expansion, higher learning and the law, read as a generous, broad-minded approach to partners and agreements.
  • Saturn: exalted in Libra. Duty, commitment, responsibility and boundaries come first, and agreements are approached with care and a long view.
  • Uranus: individuality, freedom and unconventional ideas, read as a need for independence inside a partnership and an unusual shape to the bond.
  • Neptune: empathy, tenderness, idealism and projections. A partner is easily idealized, so seeing the other person clearly is a running theme.
  • Pluto: power, intensity and the need to cooperate or share with another. Bonds are read as all-in, with questions of power close to the surface.

How to find your 7th house

Start a 7th house reading at the Descendant. The 7th cusp sign is the one opposite your Ascendant, so Gemini rising puts Sagittarius there. Then look for planets inside the house and for the house where that sign's ruler sits. Enter your birth date, exact time and city in the birth chart calculator. With a known time, the result shows the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the house of each planet; without an exact time, houses are hidden. Because house systems differ, a planet near either boundary may count as a 6th or 8th house planet in another system; the houses page explains the one Astrolivo uses.

Before the 7th comes the 6th house, the House of Health and Service, centered on daily routines, work and service. After it is the 8th house, the House of Transformation, about shared resources and intimacy. All 12 houses lays out the full wheel.

FAQ

What does it mean if my 7th house is empty? Every chart has at least two empty houses, since ten bodies are spread over twelve. An empty 7th house still has a sign on its cusp, the sign opposite the Ascendant, and that sign has a ruling planet placed somewhere in the chart. Astrologers read the 7th through those two, and the tradition does not treat an empty house as a missing area of life.

How is the 7th house different from the 1st house? They face each other across the horizon: the 1st opens at the Ascendant in the east, the 7th at the Descendant in the west, 180° apart, and both are angular. The 1st, the House of Self, is about identity, appearance, the persona and how a person begins things on their own. The 7th, the House of Balance, is about the counterpart: partners, agreements, diplomacy and the people met as equals or as open opponents. One is the person who walks into the room; the other is whoever sits down across from them.
