Uranus in Astrology
In Western astrology, Uranus is the planet of sudden and unexpected change, freedom and originality, and of ingenuity and invention. It is the modern ruler of Aquarius. NASA JPL positions put its typical stay in one sign at 7.8 years (median), long enough that people born years apart can share the same Uranus sign.
Uranus at a glance
- Rules: Aquarius (modern ruler; Saturn is its traditional ruler)
- Time in one sign: median 7.8 years; 6.93 to 8.77 years per stay (18 stays, 1940–2065)
- Retrograde: about once a year, typically for 151 days (149 to 155)
- Full circuit of the zodiac: about 84 years
What Uranus means in astrology
Of all the planets, Uranus is the one the tradition ties most closely to genius. Its other principles include discovery, electricity and progress, plus unconventional ideas and individuality. Taken together, the list describes a planet of new departures more than of continuity.
Uranus has a public side as well. The tradition links it with democracy, with evolution and revolution, and with radical ideas that challenge established structures. It also governs clubs, societies and associations whose aims are humanitarian or progressive. In a birth chart, these themes are read as attitudes toward progress and convention. None of them is a forecast of upheaval in anyone's life.
Among the planets in astrology, Uranus is a modern addition, and its rulership is modern too. Modern astrology makes it the ruler of Aquarius, a Fixed Air sign, and the sign table keeps Saturn as the traditional ruler. One modern proposal places its exaltation in Scorpio; traditional astrology gives exaltations only to the seven classical planets. The name comes from Greek myth, where Uranus is the sky in person. The planet is an oddity too: it spins on its side, so over its 84-year orbit each pole takes a turn facing the Sun.
Uranus by sign and by house
Uranus moves slowly enough that its sign marks a stretch of years rather than a season. In NASA JPL Horizons positions for 1940–2065, it completed 18 stays in a sign, the shortest 6.93 years and the longest 8.77, with a median of 7.8. Neighboring stays share a few months wherever Uranus slips back over a sign line during a retrograde, which is why twelve of them total more than the 84-year circuit. Two people born eight years apart can still have Uranus in the same sign.
For that reason the tradition takes a slow planet's sign as a generation theme, shared by a large group of births. The individual layer is the house, and the house needs a birth time. Houses depend on the time and place of birth and turn with Earth's daily rotation, so a birth a couple of hours earlier or later can put Uranus in a neighboring house. What each house covers is set out in Houses.
Take an example chart with Uranus in Gemini, a Mutable Air sign, placed in the eleventh house, the house modern astrology pairs with Uranus. Every birth during that stay has the Gemini part. The eleventh-house part belongs to this chart alone: with a birth time a couple of hours different, Uranus could sit in the tenth or twelfth house instead, and the tradition would read its themes of freedom, originality and sudden change through that house's field of life. If you look up your own Uranus this way, remember that astrology is an interpretive tradition, and science has not validated it as a method.
Uranus retrograde
Night after night, a planet changes its place against the background stars. Usually Uranus edges eastward; during retrograde, viewed from Earth, it edges west. Its orbit around the Sun keeps one direction the whole time, so the change exists only from our vantage point. Chart notation writes it as Rx.
Uranus is retrograde for long stretches. In the Horizons positions for 1940–2065 it turned retrograde 0.98 times a year, and every complete retrograde period lasted between 149 and 155 days, typically 151, or about five months. Since roughly two days in five fall inside one of these periods, natal Uranus retrograde is common.
The tradition interprets a planet in retrograde as expressing its themes in a more inward or deliberate way. Applied to natal Uranus, the pull away from the expected can be read as working first in thought: an unconventional idea is turned over privately for a long while before it shows in what a person does.
To see where Uranus sits for you, Find Uranus in your birth chart: it asks for your date, time and city of birth, costs nothing and shows the result without an account. Positions are worked out in the tropical zodiac, from Earth's point of view (geocentric). A known birth time gives Uranus's house, the house of each of the other nine bodies, and the Ascendant and Midheaven. With no birth time, the chart is drawn for 12:00 noon with a note saying so, and the Ascendant, Midheaven, houses, exact degrees and aspects stay hidden. Above about 66° latitude, where Placidus, the house system Astrolivo uses, is undefined, the chart shows the houses in the Whole Sign system with a visible label.
Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.
FAQ
Why is Uranus called the modern ruler of Aquarius? Because Uranus came late to astrology: William Herschel identified it as a planet only in 1781. Aquarius therefore has two rulers in the sign table, Uranus in modern astrology and Saturn in the traditional scheme.
Which house is linked with Uranus? Modern astrologers treat Uranus as the primary ruler of the eleventh house. That pairing is separate from the house Uranus occupies in a particular chart, which depends on the birth time and place.
