Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign (also called the ascendant) depends on the exact time you were born. The calculation needs no sign-up, and the result appears right away.
Of everything the calculator asks for, the birth time matters most for this result. If you don't know it, read the section below first.
What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology it is the starting point of your chart and is usually read as the way you come across and approach new situations.
That is all you need to use the calculator. For the full meaning, see What your rising sign means.
Why your birth time matters
The Earth turns once a day, so every zodiac sign takes a turn on the eastern horizon within 24 hours. That puts a new rising sign on the horizon roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have different rising signs if they were born a few hours apart.
This is why the calculator asks for the time, and why a rough guess can give you the wrong sign. If you were born close to the moment one sign gives way to the next, even a few minutes can change the result.
The city matters too. The horizon looks different from different places, so the same date and time can give a different rising sign in another city.
If you don't know your birth time
Check the "I don't know my birth time" box and we will calculate the rest of your chart, but we can't show a rising sign. Without a time, the chart is calculated for noon and marked as such, with no houses and no ascendant. A rising sign worked out from a guessed time would only look precise.
Where to find your birth time
- Your birth certificate. In some places the time is printed on it, in others only on the long form.
- Hospital or birth records, which you can often request from the hospital.
- Family. A parent or relative may remember the time or have written it in a baby book.
Rising vs Sun vs Moon
Your Sun sign is the one tied to your birthday. Your Moon sign depends on where the Moon was that day, and the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days. Your rising sign is the only one of the three that comes from the time of day.
In short, the Sun is read as your core identity, the Moon as your emotional life, and the rising sign as your outer manner. To see all three together, get your big three.
FAQ
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes, for a rising sign. The sign changes about every two hours, so the time has to be close. Your Sun and Moon signs depend on the date far more than on the time.
Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?
No. Without a time we can't tell which sign was on the horizon, so the calculator shows an explanation instead of a sign. The rest of your chart can still be calculated.
Why is my rising sign different from my Sun sign?
They come from different things. The Sun sign follows the date you were born, and the rising sign follows the time of day and the place. They match when you were born around sunrise, when the Sun was close to the eastern horizon.
Is a rising sign the same as an ascendant?
Yes. "Ascendant" is the astrological term and "rising sign" is the everyday name for the same point.
