Sun, Moon and Rising Sign Calculator

Your big three are your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. The Sun is read as your core identity, the Moon as your emotional nature, and the rising sign as the way you come across. The calculator shows all three at once, with no sign-up.

Your big three in one minute

  • Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. It stands for your basic character and sense of purpose. Most people already know theirs.
  • Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It stands for your feelings, habits and what helps you feel secure. Read more in Moon signs explained.
  • Rising sign: the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth time. It stands for your first impression and your manner with new people. See Rising signs explained.

Together they give a quick portrait: what you are made of, how you feel and how you appear. Astrology treats this as a framework for reflection. It describes tendencies, not fate, and it is not a science.

Why you need your birth time

Only one of the three needs the time: the rising sign. The Sun changes sign about once a month and the Moon about every two and a half days, so the date does most of the work for them. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time.

If you don't know your birth time, tick "I don't know my birth time". The result uses a noon reference and is marked as unknown-time, hiding the rising sign (Ascendant), Midheaven (MC), houses, exact degrees, and aspects—so you won't get a rising sign without a birth time. The calculator checks your entire local birth date for sign changes, and if the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changed signs that day, it shows each possible sign instead of relying on noon alone.

Beyond the big three

The big three are a starting point. A full birth chart also shows where the other planets were, which houses they fall in and how they relate to each other. When you want the whole picture, build your birth chart.

FAQ

What are my big three signs?

They are your Sun, Moon and rising signs, calculated from your birth date, time and city. The calculator above shows all three together.

Why is my rising sign missing from the result?

It appears only when you enter a birth time. Without one, we can't tell which sign was on the horizon, so the result shows the Sun and Moon and explains the gap.

How do the three signs fit together?

Astrologers read them as layers. The Sun is the core, the Moon is the inner emotional life and the rising sign is the outer style. They can agree or pull in different directions, and both are normal; a mixed set simply gives a more varied picture.
