January Zodiac Signs: Capricorn and Aquarius

January: Capricorn until the Sun enters Aquarius. In US Eastern Time the change fell on January 19 in 19 years, January 20 in 67 years, January 21 in 1 year (birth years 1940-2026, JPL Horizons); on those days the sign depends on the year and time of birth.

January at a glance

  • Signs: Capricorn → Aquarius
  • Change days (ET): see the table below
  • Elements: Earth (Capricorn) → Air (Aquarius)
  • Modalities: Cardinal (Capricorn) → Fixed (Aquarius)
  • Rulers: Saturn and Uranus (traditional: Saturn)

January birthdays day by day

For most of January the date alone gives the zodiac sign: the first 18 days are always Capricorn and the last 10 are always Aquarius. Only January 19, 20 and 21 need the birth year, and on the change day itself the hour as well.

Day of JanuarySun sign, US Eastern Time (birth years 1940-2026)
January 1–18Capricorn in every year
January 19Capricorn all day in 68 years; changed to Aquarius during the day in 19 years
January 20Capricorn all day in 1 year; changed to Aquarius during the day in 67 years; Aquarius all day in 19 years
January 21changed to Aquarius during the day in 1 year; Aquarius all day in 86 years
January 22–31Aquarius in every year

The time zone matters on those three dates: if the change comes in the first hour after midnight US Eastern Time, it is still the previous evening in Central, Mountain and Pacific Time; if it comes after 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (after 8 p.m. in years when daylight saving or 1942–1945 War Time was in effect), UTC is already on the next calendar day.

Capricorn in January

Capricorn starts in December, around December 21–22 in US Eastern Time, so by New Year's Day the sign is already more than a week old. January carries its closing weeks.

The tradition describes Capricorn with three labels. Its element is Earth, whose classical words are heavy, cold and dry; Taurus and Virgo are the other two Earth signs, and the three form a triplicity. Its modality, Cardinal, comes from its place in the season: Capricorn is the first sign of Northern Hemisphere winter and begins at the December solstice, with the seasons reversed south of the equator. Astrology associates the Cardinal modality with action. Its polarity is negative, or receptive.

Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so what follows is the tradition's picture of a sign, not a description of everyone born in the first weeks of January. Capricorn never received a modern ruler, so Saturn holds it in every list, and most of the reading runs through it. Astrology ties Saturn to duty, commitment and responsibility, to foresight and long-term planning, to practicality and economy, and also to boundaries, restrictions and tests. Set that beside the Cardinal link with action, and astrologers describe a sign that picks a distant goal, works out the steps and accepts the constraints along the way; the Capricorn zodiac sign page has the full profile.

Aquarius in January

Aquarius takes over on January 19, 20 or 21 and runs into February, until the Sun enters Pisces around February 18–19 in US Eastern Time. January holds only its opening part; most of Aquarius falls in February. The sign is Air, Fixed and positive, or active, in polarity. The classical words for Air are light, hot and wet, and Gemini and Libra complete the Air triplicity. Fixed again reflects position: Aquarius is the middle sign of Northern Hemisphere winter, and of summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

The rulership is split. Modern astrology, since the 20th century, gives Aquarius to Uranus, which astrologers associate with ingenuity, unconventional ideas, individuality, freedom and originality, and with groups built on humanitarian or progressive ideals. Classical astrology gives the sign to Saturn, the planet that also rules Capricorn.

Besides the winter season, that classical ruler is what the two signs keep across the January switch, which otherwise moves from Earth to Air, from Cardinal to Fixed and from the receptive half of the zodiac to the active one. Where astrologers read Capricorn's Saturn as building structures, they read Aquarius's Uranus as questioning them, with Saturn still there as the commitment that keeps a reform going; the Aquarius zodiac sign page takes the sign further.

Born near the change

Birthdays on January 19, 20 and 21 are the ones people call "cusp" birthdays. The word is popular, but the Sun is never in two signs at once: it crosses from Capricorn into Aquarius at one instant, and a birth date by itself does not say whether a birth came before or after it.

The usual change day has also drifted. For birth years 1940–1983 the change in US Eastern Time came on January 20 in 40 years, on January 19 in 3 and on January 21 in 1; for 1984–2026 it came on January 20 in 27 years and on January 19 in 16. January 19 went from a rare change day to a regular one, and January 21 shows up only once, in the earlier period.

The January 19 zodiac sign and January 20 zodiac sign pages give every year separately, with Eastern and Pacific Time side by side, because on a change day the calendar date can differ between the two.

For a birthday on one of these days, the year, time and city of birth settle the sign. Enter all three in the free birth chart to check with your birth time; no sign-up is needed. If the time is left blank, the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such, so the clock time on your birth record is worth tracking down.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

The months on either side: December zodiac signs and February zodiac signs. All twelve months are under birthday zodiac signs.

FAQ

What zodiac sign is January? Capricorn or Aquarius. January 1–18 is Capricorn and January 22–31 is Aquarius in every birth year; January 19, 20 and 21 depend on the year and the time of birth.

Is January 20 Capricorn or Aquarius? Usually it is the change day itself: in most birth years since 1940 the Sun entered Aquarius during January 20, US Eastern Time, so the hour decides. In other years the whole day was already Aquarius, and in a rare year it stayed Capricorn all day.

Is January 19 Capricorn or Aquarius? Capricorn in most birth years, all day long. In the remaining years the Sun moved into Aquarius during January 19, and a birthday in one of those years needs the birth time.
