February Zodiac Signs: Aquarius and Pisces

February: Aquarius until the Sun enters Pisces. In US Eastern Time the change fell on February 18 in 53 years, February 19 in 34 years (birth years 1940-2026, JPL Horizons); on those days the sign depends on the year and time of birth.

February at a glance

  • Signs: Aquarius → Pisces
  • Change days (ET): see the table below
  • Elements: Air (Aquarius) → Water (Pisces)
  • Modalities: Fixed (Aquarius) → Mutable (Pisces)
  • Rulers: Uranus (traditional: Saturn) and Neptune (traditional: Jupiter)

February birthdays day by day

A February birthday is Aquarius or Pisces, and on 26 or 27 days of the month the date alone tells you which. February 18 and 19 are the exceptions: there the birth year matters, and on the change day the clock does too.

Day of FebruarySun sign, US Eastern Time (birth years 1940-2026)
February 1–17Aquarius in every year
February 18Aquarius all day in 34 years; changed to Pisces during the day in 53 years
February 19changed to Pisces during the day in 34 years; Pisces all day in 53 years
February 20–28 (29 in leap years)Pisces in every year

The time zone can move a change day by one date. A change within an hour after midnight in the East falls on the previous evening for births in Central, Mountain or Pacific Time, and a change after 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (after 8 p.m. in years when daylight saving or 1942–1945 War Time was in effect) already belongs to the next day in UTC.

Aquarius in February

Aquarius arrives in January, around January 19–21 in US Eastern Time, so by February 1 the sign is well under way. February holds its last stretch, which ends on February 18 or 19.

Astrology sorts Aquarius by element, modality and polarity. The element is Air, described in the classical list as light, hot and wet; Gemini and Libra are the other Air signs, and the three make up a triplicity. Fixed describes its place in the season: Aquarius is the middle sign of Northern Hemisphere winter and of the southern summer. The polarity is positive, or active.

Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method, so read its descriptions of these two signs as a lens, not as facts about anyone with a February birthday. Two planets are named as the ruler of Aquarius. Uranus was assigned to the sign in the 20th century; classical astrology gives it to Saturn. Astrology links Uranus with individuality, freedom and discoveries, and also with societies, clubs and other groups that form around humanitarian or progressive ideals. Astrologers read that double role as the center of Aquarius: a sign that guards its independence and still thinks in terms of the wider group. Saturn, the older ruler, brings focus and long-term planning into the picture; the Aquarius zodiac sign page follows the sign through all of its days.

Pisces in February

Pisces begins on February 18 or 19 and carries on into March, until the Sun enters Aries around March 19–21 in US Eastern Time. February holds the opening of the sign, every day from February 20 to the end of the month plus the hours after the change. In the tradition Pisces belongs to Water and to the negative, or receptive, polarity. Water's classical words are cold, wet and soft, an element Pisces shares with Cancer and Scorpio. Mutable places Pisces as the last sign of Northern Hemisphere winter, and of summer south of the equator.

Neptune has been its modern ruler since the 20th century; classical astrology gave Pisces to Jupiter, the planet that also rules Sagittarius. Astrology ties Neptune to tenderness, peace, idealism and the collective consciousness, and Jupiter to growth, expansion, religion and higher education. From that mix astrologers describe a sign whose sympathy reaches past one person toward a crowd or a belief.

Northern Hemisphere winter goes on across the switch, and wet is the one classical element word that Air and Water share. Fixed gives way to Mutable and the active half of the zodiac to the receptive one. The classical rulers turn too, from Saturn, which astrology ties to limits and boundaries, to Jupiter and its growth and expansion, and astrologers read the late-February change as a move from drawing lines to widening them; the Pisces zodiac sign page covers the sign beyond February.

Born near the change

People often call February 18 and 19 "cusp" birthdays. At birth, though, the Sun stands in Aquarius or in Pisces, never in between: it crosses the boundary at a single instant, and only the clock time places a birth on one side of it.

The data also show the change day moving. For birth years 1940–1983 the change in US Eastern Time came on February 19 in 25 years and on February 18 in 19; for 1984–2026 it came on February 18 in 34 years and on February 19 in only 9. A February 19 birthday was once more likely than not to be a change day, while for recent birth years it usually means Pisces for the whole day.

Year-by-year answers sit on the February 18 zodiac sign and February 19 zodiac sign pages, in Eastern and Pacific Time, because one change can carry two different calendar dates across the country.

To check with your birth time, open the free birth chart and add the date, time and city of birth; it works without an account. Leave the time empty and the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such, so for a birthday on one of these two days the time is the detail to bring.

Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.

FAQ

What zodiac sign is February? Two signs share the month. Aquarius covers February 1–17 and Pisces covers February 20 onward in every birth year; February 18 and 19 can be either, depending on the year and hour of birth.

Is February 18 Aquarius or Pisces? Either. For births since 1940 it has more often been the day the Sun moved into Pisces (US Eastern Time), and then the hour of birth sorts it out; in the remaining years the whole day was Aquarius.

Is February 19 Aquarius or Pisces? Usually Pisces from midnight to midnight. In a minority of birth years, mostly before 1984, the Sun reached Pisces only during February 19, so a birth time is needed.

How this page was made

Prepared by the Astrolivo editorial team using NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data for the change days and the Wikipedia articles "Astrological sign," "Triplicity," "Astrology and the classical elements," "Planets in astrology" and "Astrology and science," then fact-checked against those sources. The sign readings reflect how the astrological tradition interprets them.
