May Zodiac Signs: Taurus and Gemini
May: Taurus until the Sun enters Gemini. In US Eastern Time the change fell on May 20 in 37 years, May 21 in 50 years (birth years 1940-2026, JPL Horizons); on those days the sign depends on the year and time of birth.

May birthdays day by day
The May zodiac sign is Taurus for the first nineteen days of the month and Gemini for the last ten, whatever the birth year. May 20 and 21 are different: the answer there needs the birth year first and, in a year when the Sun switched signs on that date, the clock time too.
Where a person was born can shift the date as well. When the Sun changes signs less than an hour after midnight Eastern Time, clocks from Chicago to the West Coast have not yet left the previous day; when it changes at 8 p.m. Eastern or later, UTC has already moved on to the next date.
Taurus in May
Taurus took over around April 19–20 (US Eastern Time), and May opens partway through the sign. May 1–19 belongs to it in every birth year, and May 20 is Taurus either all day or until the change. May 21 has a Taurus stretch only in birth years whose change landed on the 21st.
Earth is its element; the classical description runs heavy, cold, dry, and Virgo and Capricorn are the two other Earth signs. Within the season, Taurus stands in the middle of Northern Hemisphere spring, while the southern half of the globe has it in mid-autumn; the Fixed label records that position and nothing more. Taurus counts among the negative, or receptive, signs.
The descriptions that follow are the tradition's, not findings: astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically validated method; it speaks of signs rather than of each person born in May. Venus rules Taurus, and in astrology the planet stands for wanting pleasure, comfort and ease. With Venus in charge, astrologers picture a sign that treats ease as something worth arranging rather than leaving to chance: a comfortable pace, no strain for its own sake; see the Taurus zodiac sign guide for the full reading.
Gemini in May
Gemini opens on May 20 or 21, and the sign runs into June until the Sun reaches Cancer around June 20–22 in US Eastern Time. What May gets is the sign's start: May 22–31 every year, May 21 from midnight whenever May 20 carried the change, and on the change date itself whatever is left after the switch.
Air is the element, with light, hot and wet as its classical words and Libra and Aquarius as the other Air signs. In the north, spring closes with Gemini; in the south, autumn does, and Mutable is the name for that closing position. Its polarity is positive, which the tradition also calls active.
Mercury is the ruler, and astrology describes it as the planet of communication and information gathering, whose action is to take things apart and put them back together again. Next to light Air, the tradition reads a Gemini that treats an idea as parts to rearrange rather than a position to defend. The switch itself flips each of Earth's classical words into its opposite in Air, heavy to light, cold to hot, dry to wet, and moves Fixed to Mutable, receptive to active and Venus to Mercury, while the season, northern spring, carries over; continue with the Gemini zodiac sign page.
Born near the change
A May 20 or 21 birthday tends to get the "cusp" label. The word suggests a border zone, but the boundary has no width: at every moment of those days the Sun is in exactly one of the two signs.
For 1984–2026 birth years, May 20 has been the usual change day, with 27 years against 16 for May 21, US Eastern Time. Among 1940–1983 it went the other way: May 21 in 34 years, May 20 in 10. An older May 21 birthday therefore usually needs a birth time, while a recent one is more often Gemini from midnight.
The May 20 zodiac sign and May 21 zodiac sign pages set out the change time for each birth year on both coasts, since Eastern and Pacific clocks can put it on different dates.
For those two dates, three details decide: the birth year, the hour and the city. The free birth chart takes all three, with nothing to sign up for, so you can check with your birth time. If the hour is unknown, the chart is calculated for 12:00 noon and marked as such; for a May 20 or 21 birthday it pays to find the recorded hour before looking up the Sun sign.
Instead of relying on a single noon position, the calculator checks for any sign changes across your entire local birth date. If the Sun, the Moon, or another planet changes sign during that local day, the result shows each possible sign for that day rather than guessing a single one.
May sits between April zodiac signs and June zodiac signs, and birthday zodiac signs lists the whole year.
FAQ
What zodiac sign is May? Taurus up to May 19 and Gemini from May 22, whatever the year. On May 20 and 21 the year of birth matters, plus the hour if the change came that day.
Is May 20 Taurus or Gemini? It always begins as Taurus, US Eastern Time. Before 1984 that usually lasted the whole day; for 1984–2026 the Sun more often entered Gemini during May 20, and the birth time settles it.
Is May 21 Taurus or Gemini? It always ends as Gemini, US Eastern Time. For birth years up to 1983 the change itself usually fell on May 21, so the hour decides; for 1984–2026 the whole day was usually Gemini.
How this page was made
Prepared by the Astrolivo editorial team, with the May change days taken from NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris data and the sign descriptions from the Wikipedia articles "Astrological sign," "Triplicity," "Astrology and the classical elements," "Planets in astrology" and "Astrology and science"; every statement was fact-checked against them. Taurus and Gemini appear here as the astrological tradition reads them.
